Elecom combines a keyboard and a Bluetooth handset

A Bluetooth device can solve the problem of chatting on your phone while needing to keep your hands free. But a Bluetooth connection to your tablet or smartphone can be used for many things, and Japanese manufacturer Elecom has decided to combine two of them into one peripheral.

The Elecom TK-MBDD041 series is a wireless keyboard and Bluetooth handset in one. You can use it to type on a physical keyboard instead of your touchscreen. But as it is phone-shaped, you can also use it in place of your device when taking a call. You still have to hold it though, so it’s not a hands-free solution.

Why would you replace holding your phone with holding this device? Depending on where you are, getting an expensive iPhone or Android smartphone out of your pocket may not be ideal, and having a peripheral stolen causes a lot less pain for your wallet. It makes even more sense in this regard if you are using a tablet device to place a call.

The 041 also has a small display built-in, meaning you can use it to quickly see who’s calling before deciding to answer. There’s also an on-board rechargeable battery and a vibration unit, effectively making this a phone replacement when you’d rather leave your handset in a bag or pocket.
The device is compatible with both Android and iOS, and for the moment looks to be available in Japan only. As for the cost, it’s listed at $230, which prices it right out of the market for most users.

Elecom is offering us a number of alternative ways to interact with our devices recently. The most memorable of those is the laser projection keyboard unveiled late last month. Just like this device, the cost of the projector was very high at $348, but it did open up the possibility of typing on a large keyboard using just about any flat surface.
