Samsung begins Europe sales of latest smartphone

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Samsung Electronics Co., the world's largest maker of mobile phones, said its third-generation Galaxy S smartphone went on sale Tuesday in 28 European and Middle Eastern countries, hoping to cement its lead over Apple's iPhone.

The Galaxy S III smartphones hit the shelves in countries including France and Britain. By the end of July, nearly 300 mobile operators around the world will be selling the device.

Samsung said the initial response to the new smartphone was positive. At Vodafone Group, pre-sale orders for the Galaxy S III outstripped those of any previous Android-based smartphones, according to Samsung.

The Galaxy series of smartphones is widely acknowledged in the industry as a success for Samsung, turning it from a smartphone also-ran into a viable competitor with the iPhone from Apple Inc.

While Apple has kept the screen size of the iPhone the same in every upgrade since 2007, Samsung increased the screen size of its highest-end smartphone in its two major updates. The latest Galaxy phone screen is nearly twice as big as the iPhone screen.

The 4.8-inch S III also features more computing power that supports voice commands and an eye-movement tracking feature to keep the screen from dimming.

Samsung overtook Apple in smartphone sales for the first time in the first three months of this year, according to research firm Strategy Analytics. The Suwon, South Korea-based company sold 44.5 million smartphones in the January-March quarter, compared with Apple's 35.1 million iPhone sales.

Market watchers expect that Apple may use its annual conference for developers next month to announce the yearly upgrade to the iPhone, which then can go on sale as early as July.

Aside from being big rivals in the smartphone market, Samsung and Apple have also a close business relationship. Samsung supplies mobile chips and display panels for iPhones and iPad tablet computers, counting Apple among its biggest clients.

Fujifilm 16MP FinePix HS30 EXR 30x SuperZoom

Fujifilm announced the FinePix HS30EXR SuperZoom digital compact camera. Looking and handling like a DSLR, the bridge-style Fujifilm HS30EXR boasts a 30x zoom lens which covers a 35mm equivalent focal range of 24-720mm and features mechanical image stabilisation and twist-barrel manual zoom and focusing controls. Other highlights of the HS30 EXR include a 16 Megapixels EXR Back Side Illuminated CMOS sensor, a 3-inch tilting 460k-dot LCD monitor, 920k-dot electronic viewfinder with eye-sensor for automatic switching, and full 1080p HD movie recording with stereo sound.

In addition there's an ISO range of 100-12800, High Speed movie capture at 320 fps, continuous shooting at 8fps, 0.16 second auto-focusing, 600 shot battery life, a customisable Function button, full manual controls and support for the RAW file format. The Fujifilm FinePix HS30EXR is listed for $499.95. Here is the summary of review by PhotoReview Australia, giving the camera a rating of 8.5 out of 10:"First the good news: some features in the HS30 are performing a little better and there's been no overall deterioration in picture quality. The bad news is that many of the factors we found problematic in the HS20 haven't changed. The autofocusing problems we identified with the HS20 have not been fixed.

This is extremely frustrating and, consequently, we have reduced our rating for the HS30 accordingly. While the AF system is capable of locking onto reasonably contrasty subjects in bright light, it remained very slow in any but the most optimal conditions. Hunting was common in low light levels and with moving subjects as well as for close-ups. We often had to wait for a second or two for the system to lock on to subjects. To complicate matters, there's no shutter lock to prevent out-of-focus shots from being captured so good shots were often missed. Interestingly, digital zoom shots were sharp and clear (when correctly focused) and the built-in stabilisation enabled us to hand-hold the camera at an equivalent focal length to 1440mm in 35mm format using shutter speeds as slow as 1/300 second with ISO 100 sensitivity.

The exposure metering system was also somewhat variable, being easily upset with backlighting, particularly at the wide end of the zoom range. Dark subjects that covered a large part of the image area tended to be over-exposed when the Auto Dynamic Range setting was used. Despite the revisions to the 16-megapixel sensor, our Imatest testing showed resolution to be only marginally higher than we found with the HS20. It remains below expectations for a 16-megapixel camera for both JPEG and RAF.RAW files. Even using Adobe Camera Raw to process the latter failed to bring the top resolution to within a megapixel of expectations.

Tests across the focal length and aperture ranges of the lens showed edge softening was similar to the HS20 and of concern at the widest apertures, where resolution was highest. The graph below shows the results of analysis of JPEG files at the focal length and aperture settings we were able to test. The results of the lateral chromatic aberration tests were almost identical to those from the HS20, as you would expect since both lenses are the same. In the graph of our Imatest results  below, the red line separates 'negligible' and 'low' CA, while the green line marks the border between 'low' and 'moderate' CA.

Coloured fringing was less evident than we found with the HS20, although it could be seen as a cyan edging along high contrast boundaries in some shots. The lens was fairly flare-prone, even with the supplied lens hood fitted, particularly at the wide end of the zoom range. Long exposures were similar to the HS20, with noise becoming visible by ISO 1600, after which is became progressively more obvious. Both long exposures and flash shots taken at ISO 12800 were soft and blotchy. Flash shots were similar to those from the HS20, although under-exposure was less apparent and exposures were evenly balanced across the sensitivity range. Noise and softening became increasingly visible  from ISO 6400.

Auto white balance performance was slightly better than the HS20. The review camera failed to totally remove the colour cast from incandescent lighting but produced neutral colours with fluorescent lighting. Manual measurement also delivered neutral colour rendition and there are plenty of pre-sets and in-camera tweaking adjustments to enable photographers to correct most lighting casts."

Lenovo IdeaPad Z580 Ivy Bridge laptop for $749

PCs with Intel’s new Ivy Bridge platform have only just started shipping en masse in the last few weeks, yet we’ve seen a surprising number of discounts and promotions around these new models. Part of this may have to do with a lack of Core i3 and Core i5 Ivy Bridge parts, as all the models released so far have had the quad-core Core i7 chips. Since these carry a higher price tag, manufacturers may be wanting to move new models and offer discounts to avoid the sticker shock of a new, high end chip.

Whatever the reason, we always love a good deal, especially on brand new tech. Ivy Bridge is around 15% faster, 15% more power efficient, and the integrated GPU got a 60% boost in performance too. We’re still waiting for all the new models to come out, but a few manufacturers have a handful of new products available today.

Lenovo just released their second Ivy Bridge laptop, the IdeaPad Z580. It also represents one of the most aggressive prices we have seen on a new Ivy Bridge laptop. This 15.6-inch machine comes with the quad-core Core i7-3612QM, which runs from 2.1GHz all the way up to 3.1GHz via Turbo Boost. Rounding out this model’s build is a generous 8GB of RAM, a massive 1TB hard drive, and other Z580 standard features like Bluetooth 4.0 and Wireless-N.

While being sold at a ridiculously low price, the IdeaPad Z580 comes very well optioned with two USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0 ports, both VGA & HDMI output, and a 5-in-1 media card reader. Lenovo intends this machine for multimedia use, equipping more powerful speakers with Dolby Home Theater technology to give sound quality a boost. The same technology is in my ThinkPad X1 and it is a very nice addition.

If you’ve been on the fence about picking up a new Ivy Bridge system, wait no longer. These prices are very aggressive and represent a great value on this brand new tech.

Vitt Performance Mercedes CLS

Lately we’ve been seeing more and more big,  busy body kits for the Mercedes CLS. This new one from Japan is one of them craziest and busiest. Japanese tuners are very good at making ridiculously ostentatious kits for elegant, high-end cars.  They should stand back occasionally while making these cars and look what they’re doing.

Vitt’s Mercedes CLS benefits – well, suffers – from a new front bumper with three big air intakes, massively wide fenders front and rear, unique side skirts complete with air vents and side gills, a rear bumper with many holes in it and a big rear diffuser, as well as a large rear spoiler. It is good as a show car, to prove what’s possible when there’s no restrictions. But as something you can buy and drive around in, we’re not so sure.

Samsung Music Hub includes 100GB cloud storage, powered by 7digital and mSpot

When you’re playing catch-up with the likes of Apple, building your own music store from scratch just isn’t a viable option any more. Jumping into the streaming game is tough, too, with services like Spotify, Last.FM, and Pandora all having a huge head start. Samsung’s answer? To sign on with global music merchants 7digital and roll a private-label service using their existing catalog and infrastructure.

It’s a huge win for 7digital, who now becomes the default destination for all things musical on all Samsung’s new devices –which could well include laptops in addition to smartphones and tablets (and possibly other connected devices like HDTVs and refrigerators). Beyond offering 7digital’s library of more than 19 million songs for purchase, the Samsung Music Hub will also include a 100GB cloud storage locker built around mSpot — which Samsung acquired just recently.

Samsung says it wants to be “bigger than Apple.” They already are, of course, when it comes to global handset and tablet sales, and their impressive market gains will go a long way towards helping them challenge iTunes — at least when it comes to music.

The Samsung Music Hub will be 7digital’s first kick at the streaming can. They’ve got plenty of experience delivering digital downloads and cloud-connected players, however, so there’s no doubt they can pull it off. They’re the perfect partner for Samsung’s new-and-improved service, and with millions of Galaxy S3 pre-orders logged and units now shipping to customers, it won’t take long to learn what kind of impact this collaboration will have on the digital music marketplace.

How to develop deep programming knowledge?

This Q&A is part of a biweekly series of posts highlighting common questions encountered by technophiles and answered by users at Stack Exchange, a free, community-powered network of 80+ Q&A sites.

Robert Harvey asks:
Occasionally I see questions about edge cases on Stack Overflow that are easily answered by the likes of Jon Skeet or Eric Lippert—experts who demonstrate a deep knowledge of a particular language and its many intricacies. Here's an example of this from Lippert's MSDN blog:

You might think that in order to use a foreach loop, the collection you are iterating over must implement IEnumerable or IEnumerable. But as it turns out, that is not actually a requirement. What is required is that the type of the collection must have a public method called GetEnumerator, and that must return some type that has a public property getter called Current and a public method MoveNext that returns a bool. If the compiler can determine that all of those requirements are met then the code is generated to use those methods. Only if those requirements are not met do we check to see if the object implements IEnumerable or IEnumerable.

This is cool stuff to know. I can understand why Eric knows this; he's on the compiler team, so it's explicitly in his job description to know.

But how do mere mortals, those of us on the outside, find out about stuff like this?

Eric Lippert replies:
First off, thanks for the kind words.
If you want to get a deep knowledge of C# it is undoubtedly an advantage to have the language specification, ten years of design notes, the source code, the bug database, and Anders, Mads, Scott and Peter just down the hall. I'm certainly fortunate, no question about it.

However, even without those advantages it is still possible to get a deep knowledge of the subject.
Back when I started at Microsoft I was working on the JScript interpreter that shipped with Internet Explorer 3. My manager at the time told me something that was some of the best advice I've ever gotten. He said that he wanted me to become the recognized expert at Microsoft on the syntax and semantics of the JScript language, and that I should go about this by seeking out questions on those aspects of JScript and answering them. Particularly answering the questions I didn't know the answers to, because those are the ones I would learn from.

Obviously Stack Overflow and other public Q&A forums are like drinking from a firehose for that sort of thing. Back then, I read comp.lang.javascript and our internal Microsoft "JS User" forums religiously and followed my manager's advice: when I saw a question that was about the language semantics that I didn't know the answer to, I made it my business to find out.

If you want to do a "deep dive" like that, you've got to choose carefully. To this day, I am remarkably ignorant of how the browser object model works. Since I have been concentrating on becoming the C# language expert these last years, I am remarkably ignorant of how the various classes in the base class libraries work. I am fortunate in that I have a job that prizes specific deep knowledge; if your job or your talents are more in line with being a generalist, going deep might not work for you.

Writing a blog is also tremendously helpful; by requiring me to explain complex topics to other people, I am forced to confront my own inadequate understanding of various topics all the time.

Karl Bielefeldt replies:
Having been on the "guru" side of the conversation once or twice, I can tell you that a lot of times what you perceive as "deep knowledge" is often the result of the "guru" recently struggling for a month to solve the problem you're trying to solve yourself. That's especially true on a forum where people can choose which questions they will answer. Even the likes of Jon Skeet and Eric Lippert had to learn "hello world" at one point. They pick up their knowledge one concept at a time, same as anyone else.

Maglob replies:
Remixing the wise words of Yogi Bhajan:
"If you want to learn something, read about it; if you want to understand something, write about it; if you want to master something, program it."

Programming is like the ultimate teaching challenge. Teaching a computer to do something requires that you know your stuff really well. By teaching/programming, you will learn to become a master.

For example, if you want to learn physics, write a physics engine. If you want to learn chess, program a chess game. If you want to learn deep C# knowledge, write a C# compiler (or some other tool).

HLGEM replies:
I would say do the following:
After learning a relatively useful stack of languages (the ones you need for a real job) at the level where you can do most common tasks, stop learning more languages until you have studied at least one in depth. Part of the problem in our industry right now, in my opinion, is that people only learn the first 5-10% of the language before moving on to some other language. Once you have the capability to do most common tasks in a job, then start looking at one thing in depth. (You can go back to getting breadth after you get some depth, then go back and forth between the two.)

Volunteer for the more complex, harder tasks, the ones that make you go in-depth to solve the problems. If there are none where you work, look for open source tasks or start working on a personal project that will make go in-depth. If your job has no interesting problems, consider looking for a more challenging job.

Read the advanced books on one language (for SQl Server for instance this would include reading about performance tuning and database internals) instead of the "How to Learn X in 30 Days" type of books.

Read interesting questions where they are asked and try to solve some yourself. If you want to learn, try to solve some without reading the other answers first. Even if the question has already been answered, you will learn more if you find the answer yourself. You might even find a better answer than the one the question had.

Ask a few of the harder questions. Evaluate the answers you are given, don't just use them. Make sure to understand why the answer would or would not work. Use those answers as a starting place to research.
Find some good technical blogs from known experts in the field and read them.

Stop throwing away your knowledge after you are finished with it. Learn to retain. Most experts don't have to look up the common syntax. They don't have to reinvent the wheel every time they face a problem because they remember how they approached a simliar problem before. They can connect the dots and see how problem X that they did two years ago is similar to problem Y that they have right now (it amazes me how few people seem able to make connections like that).

Bart:
Get Reflector or any other decompiler (since Reflector's fee-based now), and start opening up some of the most used .NET libraries to learn how the internals work. Combined with a book like CLR via C# you'll get quite deep (deeper than most of us will go on their regular job).

Think you know the best way to develop deep programming knowledge or disagree with the opinions expressed above? Bring your wisdom to the original post at Stack Exchange, a network of 80+ sites where you can trade expert knowledge on topics like web apps, cycling, scientific skepticism, and almost everything in between.

AutoSave Essentials version 3.5

Keep your data safe with this must have Windows backup utility.

Keeping your data safe isn't always easy. It's very easy to have something eat your hard drive – a virus or other piece of malware for example or for your hard drive to fail. This is one of the reasons why I like applications like AutoSave Essentials. It’s a backup tool for Windows systems.

With AutoSave Essentials, you'll never lose important data again. With its automatic file backup software, you simply follow the wizard and select what you want to save and where you want your back up. The application automatically saves any types of documents – Photos, Emails, Videos, Documents and more without you having to worry about it. The app runs continuously in the background to automatically protect your files If disaster does strike, easily restore your data in one click.

AutoSave Essentials can save any data that is valuable to you. If you collect your family’s memories or your company’s accounts or even general data, it will protect the data that's important to you. Your data can be saved locally, externally or on remote network drives, including FTP sites, without any hassle or fuss. AutoSave Essentials works in the background while you are doing other things

Pros: Works in the background, backs up nearly anything on your PC.

Cons: It didn't wow me. AutoSave Essentials is one of many different backup apps available on Soft32

Conclusion: AutoSave Essentials is a good backup program; but there's nothing really remarkable about it. It backs up your data, any of the data you specify; and it does a good job, but it's just one of many backup apps available on Soft32. The app is reasonably priced and if you give it a try and purchase it, it's not going to be a purchase you regret making.

AutoSave Essentials does what it says -  it automatically saves (backs up) your essential files by creating a duplicate copy in the safest place you have specified. Save photos, save videos, save music, save documents, save emails - in fact save anything that is valuable. If you are the person responsible for your family’s memories

Google, Samsung unveil new version of Chromebook

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Google will try to win more converts to a computer operating system revolving around its popular Chrome Web browser with a new wave of lightweight laptops built by Samsung Electronics.

Tuesday's release of the next-generation Chromebooks will give Google and Samsung another opportunity to persuade consumers and businesses to buy an unconventional computer instead of machines running on familiar software by industry pioneers Microsoft Corp. and Apple Inc.

Unlike most computers, Google's Chromebooks don't have a hard drive. They function like terminals dependent on an Internet connection. The laptops come with 16 gigabytes of flash memory — the kind found in smartphones, tablet computers and some iPods. Two USB ports allow external hard drives and other devices to be plugged into the machines.

Chromebooks haven't made much of a dent in the market since their debut a year ago. In that time, more people have been embracing Apple's iPad and other tablet computers — a factor that has contributed to a slowdown in sales of personal computers.

The cool reception to Chromebooks has raised questions about whether Google misjudged the demand for computers designed to quickly connect to its dominant Internet search engine and ever-expanding stable of other online services, ranging from email to a recently introduced file-storage system called Drive.

"The Chromebooks have had less to offer than tablets, so they haven't been that interesting to consumers," said Gartner analyst Mika Kitagawa.

Google says it always intended to take things slowly with the Chromebooks to give its engineers time to understand the shortcomings of the machines and make the necessary improvements.

"This release is a big step in the journey to bringing (Chromebooks) to the mainstream," said Sundar Pichai, Google's senior vice president of Chrome and apps.

The upgraded laptop, called "Series 5 550," is supposed to run two-and-half times faster than the original machines, and boasts higher-definition video. Google also added features that will enable users to edit documents offline, read more content created in widely used Microsoft applications such as Word and Excel, and retrieve material from another computer at home or an office. More emphasis is being placed on Chrome's Web store, which features more than 50,000 applications.

The price: $449 for models that only connect to the Internet through Wi-Fi and $549 for a machine that connects on a 3G network. Samsung's original Chromebooks started out with prices ranging from $429 to $499. Like the original Chromebooks, the next-generation machines feature a 12.1-inch screen display and run on an Intel processor.

Google Inc. and Samsung also are introducing a "Chromebox" that can be plugged into a display monitor to create the equivalent of desktop computer. The box will sell for $329.

The latest Chromebook and new Chromebox will be available online only, beginning in the U.S. on Tuesday, followed by a Wednesday release in the United Kingdom. The products will go on sale in brick-and-mortar stores for the first time in still-to-be-determined Best Buy locations next month.

The expansion beyond Internet-only sales signals Google's determination to attract a mass audience to its Chromebooks, just as it's done with smartphones running on its Android software. More than 300 million mobile devices have been activated on Android since the software's 2008 release.

Without providing specifics, Pichai said several other computer manufacturers will release Chromebooks later this year. Google plans to back the expanded line of Chromebooks with a marketing blitz during the holiday shopping season in November and December.

One reason Google is confident Chromebooks will eventually catch on is because the Chrome Web browser has attracted so many fans in less than four years on the market. The company says more than 200 million people worldwide currently are using the Chrome browser.

Like other laptop and desktop computers, the Chromebooks will have to contend with the accelerating shift to the iPad and other tablets. The iPad 2, an older version of Apple's tablet line, sells for as little as $399, undercutting the new Chromebook. Other low-cost tablets are expected to hit the market later this year. One of them might even be made by Motorola Mobility, a device maker that Google bought for $12.5 billion earlier this month. Google so far hasn't commented on Motorola's future plans for the tablet market.

The new Chromebooks also are hitting the market at a time when some prospective computer buyers may be delaying purchases until they can check out machines running on Windows 8, a makeover of Microsoft's operating system that is expected to be released in September or October. Microsoft designed Windows 8 so it can be controlled through touch as well as keyboards. That versatility is expected to inspire the creation of hybrid machines that are part laptop, part tablet.

Olympus 16 Megapixels SZ-31MR 24x SuperZoom Camera

Olympus announced the SZ-31MR long-ranged compact SuperZoom cameras with a 24x (25-600mm equivalent) lens. The camera makes up for the blur likely at the far end of its zoom both by using a 16 Megapixels BSI (backside-illuminated) CMOS sensor and two separate TruePic V image processors (originally developed for DSLR cameras) that give it better low-light performance on top of improving camera speed and image processing.Like its predecessor SZ-30MR, the SZ-31MR iHS incorporates Multi-Recording functionality that simultaneously captures 1080p HD Video and 16 Megapixels still images.

It also comes with a new touch panel LCD and the new iHS (Intelligent, High-Sensitivity and High-Speed) technologies that capture excellent images and videos in the most challenging backlit and low light conditions. Combined with 10fps High-Speed Sequential Shooting and high-speed autofocus, iHS reduces picture noise and enhances resolution and color gradation despite fast-moving subjects, night scenes and other tricky shots. The SZ-31MR iHS comes with 3.0-inch 920,000-dot LCD, 12 Magic Art Filters, and Full HD 1080p Video.

The Olympus SZ-31MR iHS is available for $399.99 in Silver and Black. It's currently selling at around $399. Here's the summary of review by LetsGoDigital:"Just like its predecessor, the Olympus SZ-31MR has a Multi Recording (MR) function. The MR-function makes it possible to make a 1080p Full HD video recording and simultaneously capture 16 Megapixel photos. You take a photo with a tap on the screen, while recording. This way you can also change the focal point, the shutter speed and the zoom factor, all without interrupting the video recording. Additionally, the Olympus SZ-31MR is equipped with a Multi-Motion Movie stabilization and double image stabilization, in order to make sharp video recordings, without bothersome image distortions.

Other functions of the user-friendly Olympus SZ-31MR are, among others, Live Guide, with which you can adjust in real-time settings such as fading the background and adjusting the colors. There is also the advanced i-Auto mode and AF-tracking functions, with which the camera itself chooses the optimal settings and focuses. The camera also has a Macro mode, Smart Panorama, a 3D photo function and a Beauty-make up mode. To complete the story there are a mere seventeen scene programs and twelve different Magic filters available, to make photos and videos with fun effects.

The Olympus SZ-31MR is an ultra-compact digital camera with an enormous zoom range and a complete metal body. This Super Zoom camera is easy to operate with the clear and sensitive touch screen and has innovative functions, such as the iHS technologies and the Multi Recording function. The Olympus SZ-31MR also has an improved autofocus. Next to taking 16 Megapixel photos, there is also a 1080p Full HD video function available. Different photo modes allow for creativity. It is a pleasure to shoot with the Olympus SZ-31MR, the photos are colorful and sharp. The photos appear even better on the computer than on the camera screen. The Olympus SZ-31MR has been available for one month for $400 USD."

BMW Zagato Coupe Soundtrack

This year’s Villa d’Este concourse was kinda dominated by the BMW Zagato Coupe. Not even the Aston Martin AM310 could overshadow this glorified Z4. Designed by Zagato in collaboration with BMW’s own design team, the Coupe features an artistic design with lots of exquisite details, and a bespoke interior with black and red interior. We have to say looking at it now, the car looks much nicer than the first press pictures. It’s also got a sweet engine.

Although BMW didn’t comment on this, but this road-legal one-off is powered by a tweaked version of the twin-turbo straight-six 35is engine with 400 hp. It must have some tricksy exhausts as well because as you can hear in the video below, it sounds fabulous, especially on the overrun.
