Fiat Sells Out Entire U.S. Production of 2012MY Abarth 500 in a Little Over a Month

If you were eyeing the new 2012 Fiat 500 Abarth, it looks like you are out of luck, at least for the next few months, as the Chrysler Group told its dealers today that it is no longer accepting wholesale orders for the $22,000 sporty mini car, according to a report from Detroit News citing company sources.

The report said that those placing orders now will be put on a waiting list for the 2013MY Abarth 500, which is expected to begin arriving in dealerships later in the fall.

The high-performance version of the Fiat 500 went on sale in the States at the end of April, at which point, the company had already received cash deposits from more than a thousand customers, covering the entire production for the model year.

The Fiat-Chrysler alliance then increased production at the company's factory in Toluca, Mexico to its full capacity at 3,000 units, though that number doesn't seem to satisfy the demand.

Earlier today, Chrysler Group LLC CEO Sergio Marchionne and Tim Kuniskis, Head of Fiat Brand North America, visited Fiat of Austin to congratulate the dealership for becoming the first Fiat studio in the country to sell more than 100 Fiat 500s in any given month.

During his speech at the event, Kuniskis admitted that Fiat received more orders than it had originally planned to build.

"The Fiat 500 Abarth is unstoppable," said Kuniskis. "Dealer orders for the Abarth dramatically exceeded the number of units we had scheduled for production. We had to schedule additional production to try and keep up with the demand. Most Abarth units are sold within one day."

BMW’s UK Plant To Build Engines For i8 Hybrid

The sophisticated hybrid powertrain that powers the upcoming BMW i8 hybrid sports car will be made exclusively at the firm’s UK engine plant at Hams Hall, near Birmingham. Ian Robertson, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, announced this at the SMMT 2012 International Automotive Summit at Canary Wharf, London. The plant recently made its 3 millionth BMW engine, and enjoys a worldwide reputation for efficiency and quality.

The powetrain in question is an innovative eDrive plug-in hybrid, consisting of an electric drive system with a high performance three cylinder TwinPower Turbo engine producing 349hp/300Nm. That doesn’t sound especially mind-blowing for a sports car, but the i8 is hugely advanced and uses lightweight materials, so it goes from 0 to 60 mph in under 5 seconds. That will sound more impressive to you when you realize the car does nearly 78 mpg!

Thanks to its plug-in hybrid drive, most daily journeys can be taken in zero-emission all-electric mode with an electric range of approximately 20 miles. The 2+2 seater provides enough space for four people giving a high level of everyday practicality. That is marvelous. You still get the decent performance, but with no compromise on economy. We just need to know how this thing feels to drive.

Aston Martin DBS Successor To Revive Vanquish Name

More details emerge on Aston Martin’s new car, the DBS replacement codenamed Project AM310 – previewed at Villa d’Este and teased in a rather weird video. And the most important piece of news is that it’s not a DBS after all. Aston is reportedly reviving the Vanquish name for the new V12-powered, One-77-inspired super car.

There has been a couple of Vanquish Astons over the years, but the one most people remember is the 300km/h super GT that came out in 2000 when Ulrich Bez took control of the company and started revitalizing the British brand. It was a fabulous car, and very popular with footballers.

The new does model not share much of its styling with the old Vanquish. It is in fact a DBS with a more aggressive front bumper, and a side profile as well as a rear-end design inspired by the One-77 hyper car. It looks superb though, and with a tweaked V12 under the bonnet making as near as makes no difference 600 hp, it’ll be fast too.

Aston Martin Vanquish Mk2 will be officially unveiled this Summer.

On the face of it, some customers share the feeling with Chrysler. Like this owner who transformed a 2003 Sebring Convertible V6 into a fairly accurate replica of the pre-facelift Bentley Continental GTC SuperSports cabriolet.

BMW 1 Series M coupe RS

I love the BMW 1 series M coupe. It is a fantastic engineers dream. Compact, versatile, performance-focused but also practical.

Alpha-N Performance has added a few carbon fibre modifications, from a spoiler to a diffuser to give the 1M more presence as well as OZ Superforgiata rims.

The engine has also been boosted to 410HP! In a car this size, that is a massive amount of power. Remember the V10 BMW M5 has 500 HP.

The brakes have also been upgraded to feature 6 piston calipers and 380mm rotors. Excellent, they will  be needed.

2012 Mazda 3 review, specs and performance

Mazda unveiled the revised and slightly reshaped 2012 Mazda 3 at the 2011 New York auto show. You’d have to do a double take to spot any of the subtle cosmetic differences between the new 2012 model and the outgoing 2011, but pop the hood, and you’ll find yourself staring at an entirely new drive train. Actually, you’ll find yourself staring at a bright blue cosmetic engine cover, but beneath that is an all-new drive train that uses Mazda’s SkyActiv efficiency technologies.

Machine used is the SkyActiv-G gasoline-burner, which is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. The directly injected unit is rated at 40 miles per gallon on the highway in the 2012 Mazda 3, and produces 155 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 148 pound-feet of torque at 4,100 rpm. That’s a horsepower increase of five percent and torque bump of 10 percent, all in a package that’s 4.4 pounds lighter than the currently available standard 2.0-liter.

The SkyActiv-equipped 2012 Mazda 3 is offered with a choice between two transmissions: a six-speed, manual or automatic, both of which are also parts of the SkyActiv family. SkyActiv-Drive is the automatic of the group, and helps the Mazda3 achieve a range of 540 miles. While the auto is the transmission of choice for 40 mpg drives, the SkyActiv-MT also allows for efficient motoring. When equipped with the manual, the fuel economy rating dips to 39 mpg on the highway.

The interior design was no less re-imagined than the vehicle’s exterior, and was developed with the end goals of a more inviting cabin and higher-quality feel. Beginning with the instrument panel – the largest landscape within the cabin – black is now used throughout the center stack and shift gate to provide an even bolder look. Furthermore, silver-colored, satin-polished details were added to areas frequently operated by consumers, such as the outer rings of the three climate-control dial switches and the audio control panel, as well as the ventilation louvers on the center panel. In addition to creating a feeling of higher refinement, the silver-on-black color scheme further accentuates the location of these common controls and switches, which increases legibility and lessens the amount of time drivers take their eyes off the road, consequently reducing operating errors.

2013 GMC Terrain Denali Prices Revealed

You are going to get the four-wheel driver version, because it’s a SUV after all. And it’s lame to get an SUV that’s front-wheel drive. And you do want to get the V6 as well, because it makes 301 horsepower, and it includes an upgrade from 18- to 19-inch chrome-clad wheels. So the Denali you actually want will start at $38,600, which is still not bad. This GMC might not be the best in its segment, but it looks and feels, and is, unique.

The car also comes with an awful lot of safety features. The list includes forward collision alert and lane departure warning, as well as Denali-exclusive side blind zone and rear cross traffic alert.

As for the convenience and luxury features, you get stuff like an eight-way power front passenger seat and the added comfort of dual-flow dampers for the front suspension. Other standard technology and convenience features include Intellilink, GMC’s voice-controlled infotainment system with Bluetooth smartphone integration and apps like Pandora and Stitcher Smart Radio, a programmable power lift gate, and Homelink integrated garage door opener controls.

Johan de Nysschen Leaves Audi of America to Lead Infiniti's Worldwide Operations

Following the news of Johan de Nysschen's sudden resignation from the helm of Audi of America on Friday after almost two decades with the company, including seven years as its CEO, Nissan Motor Co. today announced that it has named the 52-year-old executive as senior vice president of the Infiniti brand worldwide. 

De Nysschen will officially join the Japanese carmaker on July 1, 2012, and will be based at Infiniti's new global headquarters in Hong Kong, which officially opened on May 22 this year. 

In his new position, the former head of Audi will report directly to Andy Palmer, Nissan Motor Company Executive Vice President, product planning, business strategy, marketing communications and responsible for the Infiniti division. 

"We have exciting and ambitious plans for improving the Infiniti brand including introducing new models in all markets where premium customer demand exists," said Palmer. 

"Johan is a highly successful global luxury automotive executive and his leadership of Infiniti will be a key factor in realizing the potential of the Infiniti brand," he added. 

Before joining Audi, de Nysschen worked for BMW in South Africa. During his stay in Audi, he served in executive positions in South Africa, Japan and for the last seven years, as President of the brand's American operations.

2013 Buick Verano Turbo

Buick is readying the Verano for the luxury sedan market by giving it a turbocharged engine. The 2.0 liter Ecotec unit in the Verano Turbo is the same found in other members of General Motors family, such as the Buick Regal or Cadillac ATS. In the Verano it makes 250 horsepower (187 kW) at 5300 rpm and 260 lb.-ft. (353 Nm) of torque at 2000 rpm.

If you are wondering what those numbers mean in real life, they mean you can go from 0 to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds, and have effortless performance at virtually any rpm, save the first thousands. Meanwhile because of the turbocharger you also get good fuel economy. No wonder then this engine was among the WardsAuto World’s 2012 10Best Engines for North America.

Going on sale in America later this year, the Verano Turbo will be available with a choice of a six-speed automatic transmission or a six-speed manual gearbox. Weirdly, Buick is one of the few car makers that still honors the manual gearbox. They offer more manual models than Ferrari and Lamborghini combined, which of course isn’t saying much, seeing as the Italians are totally in love with automated manuals.

Pricing and official fuel economy ratings will be announced closer to the start of production in late 2012.
