Crysis 2 is back on Steam as “Maximum Edition”

In June last year Crysis 2 disappeared without warning from Valve’s Steam digital games service. It wasn’t a mistake. The game was violating Steam’s terms of service due to an agreement made with another digital download service, namely EA’s own Origin.

It has taken almost a year to resolve the issue, but now the game is back in enhanced form and with a big discount for anyone who purchased the title on Steam previously.

The “new” version is called Crysis 2: Maximum Edition. As well as the core game you get 9 additional multiplayer maps and new game modes for them, 2 new weapons (FY71 Assault Rifle and M18 Smoke Grenades), the Scar weapon skin, a Scar hologram decoy to attach to your weapon, platinum dog tags, and access to bonus XP through custom and preset classes.

The whole package costs $39.99, but if you bought the game previously through Steam without the extras then Valve is offering 50% off. Whether you take them up on the offer really depends on how multiplayer-focused you are.

What remains to be seen now is if other EA-published games will make it on to the service. The two big omissions currently are Battlefield 3 and Mass Effect 3. Valve also needs to sort out whatever the specific issues is that causes games to be pulled for future releases. It can’t afford to miss out on key title releases if it wants to remain the number one digital games service.

Another problem Steam faces by effectively re-releasing a game like Crysis 2: price drops elsewhere. Buying the Maximum Edition may bag you a few extras, but why spend $40 when Amazon is offering the game for $9?
