Coulthard Catches 178mph Golf Ball In The SLS Roadster

As part of a viral film Mercedes Benz UK is making, they took David Coulthard and professional golfer Jake Shepherd to Dunsfold – that’s TopGear test track – for a cool challenge that resulted in bagging a a Guinness World Record. Coulthard, driving a 570-hp Mercedes SLS Roadster, caught a 178mph golf ball hit by Sheperd in the cockpit 275 metres from the tee.

This was a world record for the furthest golf shot caught in a moving car. What’s even more amazing is the fact that they managed it in only the second attempt of the day. This definitely hasn’t been an easy job. David, traveling at 120 mph at the time Jake hit the ball, had to adjust its speed and direction to get the ball in the cockpit. The event is of course filmed, and will be released in early July.

David Coulthard said: “This world record attempt is definitely one of the most unusual things I’ve ever been asked to do with a car! Jake Shepherd was great to work with and the performance of the SLS AMG Roadster made driving to catch a mid-air golf ball even more exciting. I am honoured to have received the Guinness World Record for the furthest golf shot caught in a car.”
