Radeon HD 7000M GPUs announced by AMD – improved performance, better power consumption

The more powerful a GPU is, the faster it drains your laptop’s battery – this is an unshaken norm and something we’ve eventually gotten used to especially with gaming laptops where they’re most needed. Today we’re seeing AMD launches a new range of mobile GPUs that will change our perspective. Radeon HD 7000M are GPUs that deliver powerful performance without compensating battery life.

AMD’s latest generation graphics cards are manufactured at 28nm Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture. This type of structuring significantly increases performance-per-watt ratio compared to previous attempts. As a result, the Radeon HD 7000M series offer better power management than its predecessors. Performance is also optimized by this structure. HD 7700M, 7800M, and 7900M will be appearing in laptops soon and starting today, 7970M will be an available option for gaming laptop Alienware M17x.

Of the three, HD 7900M is AMD’s flagship GPU lineup with an 850MHz engine clock, 2GB of GDDR5 memory, and 1,280 stream processors. It is capable of producing six displays simultaneously. HD 7800M is next in line and has an 800MHz engine clock, 1GB of GDDR5 memory, and 640 stream processors. You can think of the series as the HD 7900M cut in half. Lastly, there is HD 7700M with a 675MHz clock, 1GB of either GDDR3 or GDDR5 memory, and just 512 stream processors. 7700M can support up to six displays but the final number of outputs depend on a manufacturer’s implementation.

AMD benchmarked HD 7970M of the 7900M series. They compared it to previous generation Radeon HD 6990M as well as NVIDIA GTX 675M. While playing Skyrim on High Settings at 1920 x 1200 resolution, 7970M scored an all-time high of 70fps in comparison to the 49.3fps of NVIDIA’s GPU.

The benchmark test was performed on a Sandy-powered Intel laptop and not on AMD systems. Mind you, GTX 675M is a non-Kepler graphics card with an increased clock speed. This goes to show how superior HD 7000M GPUs are. And might I just add that HD 7800M and 7700M performed well too. Under the same settings and circumstances as the 7970M benchmark, they respectively scored 41.4fps and 36.9fps.

On top of the aforementioned improvements, the 28nm manufacturing process enables these GPUs to automatically shut down several cores to reduce power usage. They could also switch to integrated graphics intelligently. Whenever the integrated GPU is used, AMD says their new line of graphics cards will shut down completely and cut off power consumption. We’re expecting to see Radeon HD 7000M series in more than 200 laptops within the year.

Top 10 SUVs In 2012

Sport Utility Vehicles, or SUVs for short, are similar to station wagons, but are much lighter in their built. They mostly have four-wheel drive for on or off-road ability. However, strictly from an environmental conservation point of view, they are held similar to passenger cars. In most countries, SUVs are known simply as four-wheel drive or 4WD for short. However not all SUVs are four-wheelers. More general terms like a jeep or a Land Rover are also used. They are mostly used in urban centers on paved roads where they work their best. Each year, many of these are built by different automakers and are also showcased on vehicles-focused exhibitions. Here is the list of Top 10 SUVs for the year 2012.

10. Ford Escape
Manufactured by Ford Motor Company, Ford Escape was first introduced in 2000. Ford markets it as part of its traditional SUV lineup, but it is technically a crossover vehicle like Ford Edge or Ford Flex. In the European markets, Ford Escape was called Ford Maverick, and was developed in collaboration with Mazda. Since 2001, there have been multiple successive models introduced, including the first hybrid SUV, which was a hybrid version of Ford Escape. A new Ford Escape model is expected in April 2012.

9. Mazda CX-7
It is a mid-size crossover SUV model manufactured by Mazda and was first introduced in 2006, the first one by Mazda since its discontinuation of Mazda Navajo in 1994. From an outside, Mazda CX-7 looks a lot similar to Mazda CX-9, but they have different functionalities from the inside. The year 2012 is the last year that any CX-7s will be manufactured by Mazda, after which their production will stop.

8. Kia Sportage
It is a compact crossover SUV built by the Korean automaker, Kia Motors. It was first introduced in July 1993 and since then has had three generations of models. It is similar in many features to Hyundai Elantra, Hyundai Matrix, Hyundai Tucson, Hyundai Tiburon, and Kia Spectra. The third generation Kia Sportage has been awarded with ‘Top Safety Pick’ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in the United States. It was also one of the least expensive vehicles to insure according to Insure.com.

7. Kia Sorento
It is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured by Kia Motors. It was first launched in 2002. It is into its second generation production. It is also Kia’s first car that was built and assembled in the United States. It is related to Hyundai Santa Fe and Hyundai Veracruz/ix55. In 2011, Kia Sorento was awarded with the highest possible safety rating by the crash safety experts, European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) [8] and Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) and ‘Top Safety Pick’ from IIHS in the U.S.

6. Cadillac SRX
It is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured by the American automaker, General Motors’ Cadillac division. It was first introduced in 2004. For the years, 2010 and 2011, it was Cadillac’s best-selling model in the U.S. Recently Cadillac disclosed at the 2012 New York Auto Show that it will restyle the SRX completely. The new model is expected to start sale in the fall of this year. It is related to Saab 9-4X.

5. Hyundai Santa Fe
It is a mid-size crossover SUV which has been based on Hyundai Sonata platform. The name for this model has been derived from Santa Fe in New Mexico, United States. It was first introduced in 2001 and Hyundai’s first SUV. The popularity with American buyers for this SUV was so high that it was difficult to meet the supply demand. This model has been considered as a responsible factor for Hyundai’s success in the U.S. It faced an ad controversy in 2007 for violation of safe driving recommendations. But the vehicle has been recognized for its high safety too.

4. Toyota RAV4
The name RAV4 means “Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive”, though in some countries it is available with options. It is a crossover SUV manufactured by Toyota and was the automaker’s first of its kind. It was first introduced in 1994. Toyota has come out with many different versions of this vehicle over the years trying to match the needs and desires of its customers. The fourth generation Toyota RAV4 is reportedly to start production in the third quarter of 2012 and it will be based on the Camry platform.

3. Lincoln MKX
It is a mid-size luxury crossover (CUV) from Ford’s Lincoln division which was first introduced in 2007. It has a few styling and some premium features different from Ford Edge, but it resembles its technology a lot. It is assembled in Oakville, Ontario, Canada. The current modeling is just a little refreshment of the same old features.

2. Lexus RX
It is a crossover SUV that was first introduced by Toyota’s luxury division Lexus in 1998. There have been three generations introduced so far. In Japan, these were sold under the name of Toyota Harrier as Lexus was not yet launched in the country. It has been amongst the best-selling SUVs in the U.S. The vehicle has won numerous awards for its style and likability.

1. Nissan Murano
The name Murano is inspired from a region in Venice, Italy that is known for hand blown glass manufacturing. It is a mid-size crossover SUV first introduced by Nissan in 2002 and it was also the automaker’s first SUV for the U.S. and Canada. Its sales in Europe started in 2004 and it is available only in one version there. It has been nominated for the North American Truck of the Year award in 2003 and was named the best premium mid-size SUV by AutoPacific.

Google Drive free for download at Google Play – rebranded and reinvented Google Docs

Google Drive has long been buzzed about in the tech world but it couldn’t get any more real as it is today. Sundar Pichai, Senior Vice President of Chrome & Apps, explained it is nothing more than an evolution of Google Docs and they’re offering 5GB of free storage for everyone. Google Drive offers the same services as Google Docs and provides cloud-hosted storage. All you need is the internet and you’re free to access photos, videos, PDFs, and all other files via Google Drive – anywhere, anytime. Universal search is also built into the app, an innovation so powerful it can recognize OCR from scanned documents.

Of course, the key feature of Google Drive is cloud storage. It allows you to safely store and access all sorts of files from anywhere – whether you’re at home, work, or halfway across the globe. Files can be added into the cloud and retrieved to all Android devices so long as they have Google Drive installed. And because Google Docs is incorporated into it, you can still use it to “create and collaborate.” Users can create documents, spreadsheets, and presentations and have the option to share them to others.

Collaborators who are sharing documents can add and reply to comments on all file types. Notifications will be forwarded whenever someone comments on a shared file. Lastly, there’s the search feature which includes filtering for relevant results.

Google Drive is smart enough to recognize text in scanned documents, thanks to Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology. This means you can search scanned documents for text. Google does say that OCR is still in its early stages which means it doesn’t work all the time.

A 5GB cloud storage is offered free for everyone. If you need cloud storage past that limit, you can pay Google $2.49 a month for an extra 25GB. Other options include $$4.99/month for 100GB, and $49.99/month for 1TB. Whichever you choose, Google will throw in 25GB more free space for your Gmail.

Samsung Galaxy S III Teaser Video Implies iPhone Users Are Sheep

You can always count on Samsung for a good offensive advertisement. The Korean electronics giant is gearing up to launch the next version of its Galaxy S Android phone — the Galaxy S III — on May 3, and today has released a video teaser, claiming the phone will set you apart from everyone else.

Images of outer space flash as the video begins and then grand on-screen messages appear, including “a galaxy fits perfectly in your hand” and “as you gain the power to explore it freely and swiftly.”

The real punch comes at the close. “With technology that fits in this easily, you can now stand out from… everyone else” flashes on the screen — just as a bunch of sheep appear in place of those cosmic vistas in the background.
Samsung doesn’t blatantly refer to the sheep as Apple iPhone users, but it is implied. Take a look:
As CNET’s Don Reisinger writes, “Although the company didn’t mention Apple or its customers by name, detractors have long called the iPhone maker’s faithful customers ‘iSheep’ for their ostensible willingness to follow Apple’s lead and buy its products whenever they launch.”

The Galaxy S III is likely to be the official Olympics phone as Samsung is a sponsor of the games in London this summer. The phone is rumored to have a 1.5GHz processor, 4-inch Super AMOLED display, 1GB of RAM, and run Google’s latest version of Android 4.0.

White Nokia Lumia 900 arriving early at some AT&T stores

The white Nokia Lumia 900 is officially slated to hit AT&T this Sunday, but if you've had your eyes on the pale Windows Phone and feel like calling your local AT&T stores, you may be able to score one today. Chris Weber, president of Nokia's North American arm, tweeted out the two images you see below earlier today, showing a pair of customers that were able to procure a white Lumia 900 ahead of its official release date. Weber later sent out a tweet explaining that although the official release date for the white 900 is April 22nd, "a number of the AT&T stores are apparently releasing them early today." WPCentral called several stores around the New York area and discovered that many stores received a demo unit like the one you see above today, with more units expected today or tomorrow. However, it's reportedly up to the store to decide whether they'll actually sell the devices early or hold them until Sunday.
The white version of the Lumia 900 will be priced at $99.99 just like its black and cyan brothers and will also share the same feature set. The difference with the white model, though, is that it's got a glossy body rather than the matte finish found on the black and cyan variants. If that sounds like it's up your alley and you want to be the first kid on your block with a white Lumia 900, you may want to start giving your local AT&T outlets a call to see if they'll let one go early. Be sure to shout it out in the comments below if you're lucky enough to snag one before Sunday!

Sony Xperia P release date revealed for UK?

Sony continues its solo adventure in the mobile market as it rolls out another handset: this time it's the turn of the Sony Xperia P.

We first saw the Xperia P at MWC 2012. It slides into Sony's range below the fully-featured Xperia S and it will sit in the middle of a trio of handsets once the budget-focussed Xperia U arrives.

If you opt to plup for a Sony Xperia P then you'll get a 1GHz dual-core processor, 4-inch display, Android 2.3 (with an update to Ice Cream Sandwich coming later in the year), 8MP camera with HD video recording, 16GB of internal storage and NFC technology bundled with a few of Sony's NFC SmartTags.
Available for pre-order today

The Xperia P has cropped up for pre-order on a couple of online retailers, with Clove pricing the handset at £330, while Expansys is asking for £339.

According to Clove, the first stock of the Xperia P is set to arrive during the week commencing May 7, which is less than 3 weeks away.

There's currently no word on contract deals, but we reckon this mid-range phone will probably slot in at around £25 per month.

Hyundai Defies European Economic Crisis, Records Best Ever First Quarter Sales

Whereas many carmakers are seeing their sales shrink in Europe due to the financial crisis, Hyundai managed to register a record number of new cars between January and March 2012 with 114,571 units. This represents an increase of 12.5 percent over the same period 12 months ago.

In contrast, the overall European new car market declined by 7.3 percent in the first quarter of the year. The Korean automaker now holds a 3.3 percent share of the market.

In addition to its best-ever first quarter sales, Hyundai also posted 50,131 new car registrations across Europe in March, which is another record for the company and an increase of 13.8 percent over 2011. In March, the overall European new-car market declined by 6.6 percent.
The i30 compact hatchback and station wagon, the ix35 crossover (Tucson in North America) and the ix20 tall supermini that are all built at the company's plant in the Czech Republic, accounted for more than 50 percent of Hyundai's European sales during the first quarter.

"Hyundai cars are designed, engineered and manufactured in Europe for Europeans - our performance in quarter one demonstrates how well this strategy is working," commented Allan Rushforth, COO of Hyundai Motor Europe.

"Another European car, the New Generation i30, has just gone on sale and we expect this new model to drive us towards our market share goal of 3.5% by the end of 2012."

HTC will soon roll out their new HTC Wildfire C which will run on the Android 4.0 OS and probably come loaded with a low powered CPU (Below 1 GHz). The Wildfire C with its trim down features will help make the price tag quite affordable.

Chrome for Android gets desktop mode and download support

The Google Chrome for Android beta has just been updated, and at least one new feature will have power users rejoicing. Chrome now lets you switch between a website’s mobile and desktop versions, just as a proper mobile browser should.

Chrome also now allows you to drop shortcuts to your favorite websites directly onto your Android home screen for faster access. System-wide proxy settings are now supported as well, and you can also specify which Android apps you’d like to use to open specific files types when you click on a URL in Chrome. A handful of other improvements also made the cut, including support for right-to-left languages.

There’s still quite a way to go before Chrome for Android is ready to dump the beta tag, of course. Despite the arrival of desktop features like  tab synchronization, support for Flash remains MIA. While Adobe is no longer developing the mobile Flash plug-in, it’s possible that Google will deliver the newer Pepper version that ships with Chrome on other platforms to Android Devices. Chrome OS runs on ARM, too, so it’s still possible that Chrome for Android will one day receive Flash support.

The goal, of course, is to end up with a single browser to develop and maintain across all platforms — Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, Google TV, and Chrome OS.

If you’re interested in checking out the progress so far, fire up Google Play on your Android device and install the latest beta version. As long as you’ve got Ice Cream Sandwich on your phone or tablet, you’re good to go.
