Sony Releases Firmware V1.02 for SLT-A57 Improves AF Performance

Sony today posts function enhancing firmware updates for its SLT-A57 translucent mirror cameras. The upgrade promises to provide improved AutoFocus (AF) performance in Continuous Advance Priority AE Mode (both Tele-zoom 12fps and 10fps) under certain circumstances. On March 12 2012, Sony announced the successor to Sony's a55 camera, the A-mount a57 with Translucent Mirror Technology which directs incoming light to the CMOS image sensor and the AF sensor at the same time, allowing full-time continuous AF during both still and video shooting.

The a57 camera can shoot still images at up to 12 fps (at 8.4 Megapixels), capture full HD video at 60p, 60i or 24p frame rates and has a variety of creative modes including Auto Portrait Framing.  The a57 shares the a65's 15-point AF system with three cross sensors for fast accurate TTL phase detection autofocus with enhanced Object Tracking AF that keeps selected objects in sharp focus. There are 11 effects and 15 total variations for in-camera Picture Effect modes, including Pop Color, HDR Painting, Miniature Mode.

Still and video shooting, framing, focusing and real-time preview of exposure adjustments can be done via the new Tru-Finder electronic viewfinder at 1440k dot resolution and a 100% field of view, or via the angle-adjustable 3-inch Xtra Fine LCD display. Sony is also introducing a new $250 battery-powered LED video light (model HVL-LE1) for recording video indoors or in low light. The new firmware is available immediately from Sony USA website below:
