Skyrim DLC Dawnguard is Xbox 360 timed exclusive

Even before Bethesda released Skyrim we all knew that DLC packs would be appearing a few months later. Today, Bethesda confirmed the first of those packs, however, there’s a big “but” for anyone who doesn’t own Microsoft’s console.

The good news is, Skyrim is getting its first DLC, which will be called Dawnguard. Bethesda has only released the image you see above to confirm its existence. And now here’s the but: Dawnguard is only coming to the Xbox 360 this summer.

Bethesda has promised more detail about the new content at E3, which starts on June 5. Most concerning is the fact this only seems to be for the Xbox 360, at least initially. That makes little sense, especially when you consider the healthy following the game has on PC and the uproar caused by poor performance and bugs on the PS3 by the thousands who bought it for Sony’s machine.
The fact it says “before it’s available anywhere else” suggests Microsoft has paid for an exclusivity period. Again, that is just going to anger gamers on other platforms who paid the same price as those who own a 360 to get the original game.

Exclusivity works best for big game releases where gamers will consider buying a system to get it, e.g. a new Halo. However, to impose the same delay on a new batch of content for a game that all platforms already have access to only makes sense for the publisher/developer getting the payment from Microsoft. I doubt anyone is going to buy an Xbox 360 and Skyrim just to get access to this DLC.

So, when can PC aND PS3 owners expect to get Dawnguard? Microsoft has probably paid for 3 or 6 months of exclusivity, meaning if it appears in July on 360 then other platforms won’t get it until at least October, or possibly Feburary next year.
