The smartphone battle has been raging hard for the past few years. Until
recently, the only serious contenders were Apple (iOS) and Google (Android),
with RIM’s Blackberry taking a backseat to the other touchscreen wonders.
Microsoft has been talking up its Windows Phone 7 devices since 2010, but
despite close control if its hardware partners has not produced an especially
standout phone to pull people away from the shiniest fruit and droid
offerings.
Microsoft is starting to turn the tide, though with help from an unlikely
source: its Finnish friends, Nokia. The Lumia 900 is a radical shift for the
manufacturer that is taking a big leap into the modern smartphone world and a
big gamble that Microsoft needs to pay off if it has a shot at competing in the
smartphone market. Thankfully for both of them, reviewers are rather smitten
with the unique European hardware.
Our own Geek review of the Lumia 900 sings praises of a friendly, fast
interface and sexy phone, with a 4 out of 5 rating on PCMag.com telling a
similar story. It’s fast, it’s beautiful, and it runs on AT&T’s super-fast
4G LTE network. What sweetens the deal even more is its planned entry-price of
$99, undercutting comparable Android and Apple phones by hundreds of
dollars.
Still, that wasn’t enough for us deal sleuths and found Amazon offering this
gorgeous smartphone for only $49.99 with a new contract. This includes free
2-day shipping and even a 14 day price guarantee. If you’re in the market for a
new smartphone on AT&T, all the positive buzz says you should give the Lumia
900 (and Windows Phone 7) a hard look. The hardware is top notch and, with this
deal, an amazing bargain.
